History and Background

  • Salt Pans Beginnings: Before the tourism boom of the 1970s, the coastal area around Playa Bastián was used for salt works (salinas) owned by local families like the Toledo group. 
  • First Building: In 1963, the Toledo family built Villa Toledo directly on the beach, which stands as the very first structure constructed in the modern resort area of Costa Teguise. 
  • Resort Development: The surrounding beach area and promenade were further developed in the late 1970s and 1980s, transforming the rugged coastline into an accessible, landscaped leisure spot. 
  • Natural Features: The beach features traditional low stone windbreak walls (picon or volcanic stone enclosures) built into the sand to offer shelter from ocean breezes, alongside a historic watchtower at its southern end.
