Hola,
I decided to begin this blog as a consequence of a stroke I suffered last October,2012.
As this is 6 months on, it could not be described as a knee- jerk reaction.
Apart from the stroke, from which I have recovered, there are certain, residual conditions with which I have had to come to terms. They are:-
Loss of the senses, taste and smell.
Two fractured vertebrae.
Fusing of bones in upper, right shoulder.
In the course of my recuperation,I have received great support from my endlessly patient wife and family; plus the solicitude of good friends.
The NHS,located at our nearby hospital, Good Hope, were magnificent in their treatment of the stroke. For a variety of reasons, the treatment of the conditions outlined above, remains unsatisfactory. Plenty of x-rays and scans, but no actual treatment, nor physiotherapy.
So, after a period of wound licking and self-pity, it became apparent that I needed an aim, to propel myself towards some semblance of normality.
A Caminho….
With a small group of fellow Caminhoists, I am walking from Lisbon to Oporto in June 2013 along the coastal route; a trail that will require pragmatic decision taking, each day, as exhaustive searches have proved fruitless in obtaining definitive maps and guides.
Every great journey begins with a single step, they say….

Sorry to hear about your stroke & good news you have recovered. John Tighe with his usual ability to understate things told me you had fallen over & were unwell as a result 🙂 Would love to do what you are planning but still working full time – just get a little time out to go running now.
All the best – not forgetting the old (and hackneyed) Chinese proverb “A journey of a thousand miles starts with one footstep” Vaya con Dios.
Best wishes john
Speedy recovery
